Preparing Written Materials | Current Students

Preparing Your Written Application Materials

Our Application Writing Support program is available to students who meet certain eligibility standards and deadlines. This process has been thoughtfully designed to meet the following three objectives:

  • You will attend a series of required group meetings that will help you understand how to prepare effective and compelling written application materials
  • You will be given a clear set of tasks to complete, with externally imposed deadlines that will keep you on track so that you will be prepared to navigate the application process successfully
  • You will work individually with our pre-health advisors to discuss your drafts of your written application materials (e.g., personal statement, activity descriptions, disclosure statements, and secondary application essays).

How to Participate in the Application Writing Support Program

Program Enrollment and Coursework

Option 1: Currently Enrolled Students

You must:

  • Be currently enrolled in one of our post-baccalaureate programs, and
  • Be on track to complete at least 9 credit hours of pre-health coursework in the program by June 1 of the year in which you will submit your professional school application.
    • At least 5 of those 9 credit hours must be completed in an in-person format (daytime or evening).

Option 2: Former Students

  • You must have completed at least 18 credit hours of pre-health coursework while enrolled in one of our post-baccalaureate programs, with at least 5 of those credit hours completed in an in-person format (daytime or evening).Ìý

Recent Pre-Health Coursework

  • Beginning with the summer term two years prior to submitting your professional school application, you must have completed at least 9 credit hours of pre-health prerequisites or math/science electives.Ìý
    • For example, if you plan to submit your professional school application in Summer 2027, you must have completed these 9 credit hours during or after Summer 2025.
  • If you took some of those credits at another institution, at least 3 of those credit hours must have been taken at Ä¢¹½Ó°Òô Boulder while enrolled in one of our post-baccalaureate programs.

If you do not meet this recency requirement but have remained actively engaged in individual pre-health advising and the professional school application process, please contact us to ask whether you may qualify for an exception.

Recent Individual Pre-Health Advising

  • You must have completed at least one individual pre-health advising session on or after June 1 of the year prior to submitting your application to professional school.
    • For example, if you plan to submit your application in Summer 2027, you must have completed at least one individual pre-health advising session on or after June 1, 2026.

Academic Performance

By January 1 of the year in which you will submit your professional school application:

  • Your cumulative undergraduate GPA must be at least 3.0.
  • Your science GPA (as defined by the common application service for your intended profession) must be at least 3.0.

By May 15 of the year in which you will submit your professional school application:

  • In each of your three most recent academic terms, you must have completed at least 6 credit hours of BCPM coursework with a term GPA of at least 3.3.
  • You must have completed 100% of all courses attempted (with no Incompletes or Withdrawals) in your two most recently completed academic terms.

If your GPA or academic record does not meet these requirements, email ceprehealth@colorado.edu to ask whether you may qualify for an exception.

Clinical Experience

  • By June 1 of the year in which you will submit your professional school application, you must be on track to earn a total score of at least 8 on our Self-Assessment, including a score of at least 2 in the Direct Patient Interaction category.
  • Please note: You must maintain ongoing engagement in relevant clinical experience, with no gaps greater than six months. If you have had a gap of more than six months, you must resume regular engagement in direct patient interaction in a clinical setting for at least 6 hours per month to become eligible for Application Writing Support.

Each of the three required "Get Ready to Apply" workshops will be offered twice: in-person during the fall semester, and Zoom during Winter Break.Ìý

Refer to the Upcoming Events webpage for dates and details.

  • Save a personal copy of theÌý. Be sure to keep it formatted as a Google Sheet.
Note: The master document is "View Only." Save a copy for your own use, then updateÌýthe sharing settings of your copy so that "Anyone with the Link" can edit.
    Ìý
  • The "Assignments & Deadlines for App Writing Support" provides a checklist of videos to watch, tasks to complete, and instructions for submitting your Pre-Application Spreadsheet by the November 1 deadline. Please do not leave this until the last minute; it will take several hours to complete all of the requirements.Ìý
    Ìý
  • We will review yourÌýPre-Application Spreadsheet's version history to verify that you have completed all required sections by the deadline. Late or incomplete submissions will not be accepted, and no exceptions will be made.Ìý
  • Over Winter Break, you will complete additional sections of your Pre-Application Spreadsheet, including full drafts of your personal statement and your application activity entries.
  • Detailed instructions for completing and submitting these additional sections of your Pre-Application Spreadsheet are posted on the "Assignments & Deadlines for App Writing Support" tab.
  • Application Writing Support sessions are offered in three waves in the spring and summer (one session per student per wave). Earlier submissions qualify for more waves.Ìý
  • These sessions do not roll over. If you miss a wave, you cannot make it up later.Ìý
  • If you are a pre-PA, pre-PT, pre-optometry, or pre-veterinary student applying to programs with admissions deadlines later in the summer, you may be eligible for an adjusted timeline. Please contact a pre-health advisor by email or during an individual advising appointment to discuss later deadlines and appointment windows, which are available on a case-by-case basis. To be considered for an adjusted timeline, please contact us before the next applicable deadline.
Coaching waves and deadlines.

Once you have been approved for the Application Writing Support program, you may schedule pre-health advising appointments for application writing support (that is, discussing your written drafts of your personal statement, complete set of activity descriptions, or representative set of ~5 secondary essays).

Logistics to keep in mind:

  • Schedule your advising sessions in Buff Portal Advising as you would for a regular pre-health advising appointment, but indicate in the "Reason for Appointment" box that you are seeking application writing support. Indicate which document you would like your advisor to review in advance. If you do not have access to Buff Portal Advising, call our office at 303-492-5148 and select the option for Academic Advising for scheduling assistance.
  • Ensure that you keep all of your drafts (or links to your drafts) in your Pre-Application Spreadsheet, not in separate stand-alone documents
  • For writing support on your personal statement, be consistent about working with the same pre-health advisor each time.
    • Jessica Talbot provides synchronous feedback during Application Writing Support appointment times.
    • Elisa Miller provides asynchronous feedback, in writing.
      • For personal statement feedback from Elisa, reserve an advising appointment time for that purpose, but you won’t actually meet at that time. She’ll use that time to review your draft and prepare written feedback for you.

Videos of our Get Ready to Apply workshops

If you were unable to attend our live Get Ready to Apply workshops, you can watch recordings of those sessions here. These videos are provided to support your preparation for application season, but viewing the recordings does not qualify you for the Application Writing Support program. Eligibility requires attendance at a live version (in person or on Zoom) of all three workshops.
