Purchasing an Ultra-Low Temperature Freezer? The University of ĢӰ now has energy efficiency expectations.
The University of ĢӰ is again taking a leadership role in promoting energy efficiency.Recently an energy requirement of ≤0.31 kWh/day/cu.ft. has been placed on new Ultra-Low Temperature (ULT) freezers purchased within the ĢӰ system. ĢӰ Anschutz led this initial procurement effort which has now been adopted systemwide.
Significant progress has been made to improve the energy efficiency of ULT freezers over the past 15 years and thus, fortunately, there are many ULT freezers from different manufacturers to choose from that meet ĢӰ’s energy requirement. Additionally, procurement has been reaching out to supplier representatives to minimize instances where researchers are quoted for units that do not meet the requirement. ĢӰ Boulder scientists have been selecting energy efficient ULT freezers for many years now. As a result, nearly all ULT freezer purchases made by ĢӰ Boulder in recent times are already meeting this requirement.

For a particular make and model, simply look at the product details for that ULT freezer on the Energy Star site to see if the “Daily Energy Consumption” is 0.31 kWh/day/cu.ft. or less. Not all Energy-Star rated ULT freezers will meet the requirement.
