New Tech Maps the Past
High tech devicesĀ fly high when it comes to archaeological mapping.Ā Ā Professor Gerardo Gutierrez of the Ä¢¹½Ó°Ņō Boulder Anthropology Department has found that the right technologyĀ can free up hours of work for the archaeologist.Ā Ā Gutierrez has receivedĀ twoĀ ASSETT Development Awards to purchase state of the art mapping technology for his students to learn to use.Ā Ā With matched funding from the Department of Anthropology, Gutierrez purchased two total stations, one Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), andĀ related mapping software.Ā Taking aerial pictures with UAVsĀ is aĀ great improvement over more traditionalĀ mapping methods.Ā Ā Until recently,Ā an archaeologist relied uponĀ total stations, which require hours in the fieldĀ to take measurements ofĀ hundreds of points.
GutierrezĀ used the equipmentĀ that he purchased to conduct mapping research with his students this past spring.Ā They found thatĀ mapping with UAVsĀ isĀ more affordable and fasterĀ thanĀ is mapping withĀ the moreĀ traditional archaeological tools. Even the initial purchase ofĀ a UAV has become more affordable in recent years: "New digital photogrammetry is emerging very fast," says Gutierrez.Ā Ā Also,Ā the UAV isĀ smaller, more compact, and lighter in weight than is a total station.
With the ASSETT Development Award funding,Ā Gutierrez was able to purchase software that interprets the photos from the UAVĀ camera.Ā He noted that the software, "... generates high resolution georeferenced orthophotos (up to 5 cm accuracy)Ā Ā and exceptionally detailed Digital Elevation Models.Ā This software enables students toĀ process thousands of Ā aerial images on a desktop computer to produce professional photogrammetric data."Ā Gutierrez and his studentsĀ (Ä¢¹½Ó°Ņō Boulder students Grace Emy, Alyssa Friedman, Melanie Godsey, and Machal Gradoz)Ā found that it takes 27 timesĀ longer to gatherĀ data mapping with a total station than with a UAV.Ā They created aĀ trainingĀ modelĀ forĀ others to use whenĀ learning to map with total stations and UAVs.Ā Ā Gutierrez and hisĀ teamĀ found thatĀ even training others to map withĀ UAVs takes much less time--3.5 times less time--than training someone to use and interpret data from a total station or a LIDAR system (mapping dataĀ taken from a piloted aircraft).Ā TheyĀ submitted these findingsĀ to the journal, Advances in Archaeological Practices for the Society of American Anthropology.
Gutierrez led one of the four GIS ArcMap workshop sessions this spring, which were also funded by ASSETT Development Awards!Ā He partnered with Classics DepartmentĀ Professor Elspeth Dusinberre.Ā Further, Gutierrez has taken his equipment training across borders through a partnership with the Insitituto Nacional de Anthropologia e Historia (INAH), the Mexican government's Cultural Resource Management agency.Ā Ā Gutierrez trained Mexican archaeologists in using such equipment to create archaeological maps.
Gutierrez says, "We are really grateful for the assistance of ASSETT. Ā Without this funding, we wouldnāt have been able to do any of this."
