Keeping Learning Current: Inside Our Course Refresh Initiative

Online learning doesn't stand still, and neither do our courses. As industries evolve, technology advances, and learner expectations change, maintaining a high-quality learning experience requires continual improvement. That's why the Office of Academic and Learning Innovation is committed to regularly refreshing our Coursera courses, ensuring learners receive content that is relevant, engaging, and aligned with today's professional landscape.
"Course refresh is essential to creating meaningful and lasting learning experiences. Throughout the refresh process, we review student feedback and course data to identify and strengthen what is working well and address barriers learners may be facing. It also gives us an opportunity to step back, revisit the course's purpose, and ensure that its content remains accurate and relevant," Dillon Gidgumb, ALI's Senior Learning Experience Designer said. Ìý
"Additionally, as Coursera continues to release new course-authoring capabilities, a refresh allows us to explore how those tools can better support learners, strengthen feedback and instruction, and create more meaningful opportunities for them to apply what they are learning," Gidgumb said.
These updates are much more than cosmetic revisions. Each refresh is a collaborative effort involving faculty, instructional designers, and program staff who evaluate course content through learner feedback, course performance data, and evolving best practices in online education.
Instructor, Author, and Certified Life Coach Jordan Maness is one of the instructors ALI has worked with both on a course refresh and creating a new specialization from existing, refreshed courses.Ìý
"We listened to feedback from early adopters of the course and made changes to make the course more interactive with less required reading.Ìý We re-launched in late 2025 and have heard great things about some of the course's newest features (including strategic use of AI).Ìý I'm thrilled to announce the latest endeavor which is how we've combined 'Thriving 101' with two other dynamic courses created by fellow Ä¢¹½Ó°Òô colleagues to make for a fantastic and meaningful specialization called, 'Creating an Intentional Life: Attention, Values, and Purpose.'Ìý We feel the timing is optimal for a specialization like this to come along and we can't wait for many learners to dive-in to the content and start living the intentional and fulfilling lives they have always wanted to live," Maness said.
ALI has also committed to refreshes of our for-credit courses. The Master's of Engineering Management program is going through a full refresh to ensure the degree program continues to be relevant and engaging to learners in the Engineering Management program.
"We are committed to refreshing our entire curriculum on a regular, multi-year cycle with current instructors and faculty. We began our review in 2025-2026 with the ME-EM core specializations (Technical Communication, Leading Oneself, Project Management, Finance for Technical Managers), and are continuing through the electives. Our process is informed by the end‑of‑session course survey results, Coursera course ratings and reviews, input from key stakeholders, an internal quality rubric, as well as other qualitative and quantitative evidence," Shane Hua, Program Manager of the Engineering Management program said.Ìý
As course refreshes continue across the curriculum, each update reflects the same goal: providing learners with educational experiences that are current, practical, and engaging. By combining faculty expertise, learner insights, and thoughtful instructional design, the Office of Academic and Learning Innovation is ensuring its courses continue to deliver meaningful value for learners today and in the years ahead.
